Five years ago, in December of 2018, registered nurse Bridget Lucas-Gehring brought her skills as an experienced burn and wound nurse to Compass Memorial Healthcare (CMH) in Marengo. Before that, and since 1999, she’d worked at the University of Iowa Hospitals and Clinics Burn Treatment Center. Gehring brought more with her, however, than just her skill, experience and connections to the UIHC. She brought the fruits of an 18-year, passionate investment in developing and growing aftercare programs for burn survivors and her association with St. Florian Burn Foundation. Founded in 1993 by nurses at the St. Luke’s Burn Center in Sioux City and by the Sioux City Professional Fire Fighters IAFF Local #7, the St. Florian Burn Foundation’s stated focus is “to support pediatric burn survivors from the state of Iowa and surrounding states.”
