One person is hospitalized following an early morning fire at a Des Moines apartment building, police said in a press release. Des Moines police and fire department personnel responded to reports of smoke in the halls of an apartment building on Creston Avenue at approximately 12:35 a.m. Sunday. When they arrived, first responders found heavy smoke in the building. A tenant told fire crews the source of the smoke was a first floor apartment. Firefighters were able to evacuate the resident of that apartment, a 65-year-old man, via a bedroom window. The fire was successfully extinguished by fire crews. Police say the 65-year-old man is currently hospitalized in "critical condition". A pet was also transported to an emergency veterinary clinic for care. Polk County Emergency Management is assisting several residents who have been displaced due to fire damage.
