Authorities say fire pit ashes are to blame for flames impacting two homes in Cedar Rapids Sunday. First responders were called to 3700 Blue Mound Dr NE around 3:15pm. Investigators the ashes from the pit were put in a yardy cart, which was the source of the fire that started in the garage of one of the homes. The home suffered heavy fire damage in its garage area before firefighters doused the flames. The wind pushed the flames to a neighboring house also causing heavy damage. No one was hurt. Officials say this serves as a reminder that ashes can retain their heat for days and that they need to be thoroughly soaked before throwing them away.
