One person escaped a Crystal Lake home that caught fire Friday night before firefighters arrived, officials said. The Crystal Lake Fire Rescue Department was called about 8:40 p.m. to the 200 block of West Woodstock Street in Crystal Lake. One person was home when the fire started, according to a news release from the department, and a neighbor notified that person of the fire. Smoke and flames were coming from the second floor and roof when firefighters arrived. Crews attempted to enter the home, but retreated because the entire attic area was on fire, according to the release. Crews worked to bring water to the building from the outside, and the fire was under control by about 10 p.m. No one was injured in the fire, and the cause is under investigation. A second Mutual Aid Box Alarm System was called to bring in assistance from other area departments. The fire caused extensive damage to the home, which was deemed uninhabitable. Estimated damage is $125,000, according to the department.
