You usually see police officers and firefighters on the streets protecting the community, but Friday evening they faced off on the ice.
Members of the Bloomington-Normal community supported the 2019 Guns and Hoses benefit hockey game at the Grossinger Motors Arena, where police officers and firefighters joined in a friendly competition.
All proceeds raised from the event will go toward Special Olympics, an organization that offers training and competition in sports to athletes with and without intellectual disabilities.
Officer Brian Larimore, from the Normal Police Department, said it's a competitive game, but no matter who wins the title the actual winners are Special Olympics and the athletes that benefit from their service.
"It puts so many smiles on so many faces and gives everybody the chance to feel the opportunity of self-achievement and comradery in athletics," Larimore said.
