Every time Rockford firefighters respond to a call, they check to see if the home has a working smoke detector. If not, they'll install one for free.
To keep the program going, Swedish American donated $1,000 to the Rockford Fire Department on Friday.
Chief Derek Bergston says installing smoke alarms in every home improves the safety of the entire community.
"A month ago, we had two fire fatalities. One of those did not have a working smoke alarm," Bergston said. "And those are all preventable. This is early notification that you have a fire in your home, so you can safely exit the building in a timely manner, prior to the arrival of the fire department."
