A driver climbed out her sunroof before her wrecked vehicle burst into flames Thursday morning.
At 8:24 a.m., the Peoria Fire Department was called regarding a vehicle fire at the War Memorial Drive exit from westbound Interstate 74. Crews arrived to find a vehicle fully engulfed in flames in a wooded ravine off the interstate.
The vehicle had veered off the road and hit an Illinois Department of Transportation electrical box before coming to a stop.
“The female driver of the vehicle was able to self-extricate from the vehicle through the sunroof,” said Battalion Chief Mike Hughes.
The driver was able to flee the vehicle before it became engulfed in fire. There were no other occupants.
Firefighters extinguished the blaze. The motorist was taken to a local hospital. A condition report was unavailable, but her injuries were not life-threatening, Hughes said.
