Fire crews were on the scene of an active gas leak in Wilmette Thursday morning, according to the village. Staff asked residents in the area of 7th Street between Greenleaf and Central avenues to remain inside their homes, close all windows and doors and avoid driving anywhere. Firefighters were set to head door-to-door to make sure those who live in the area are safe, according to a notice from village staff. Staff from natural gas company Nicor were also on scene. All others were asked to avoid the area.
