The Decatur Fire Department is giving locals a heads-up as they prepare to flush and assess city fire hydrants throughout April. Firefighters will be working with the Decatur Water Department on the effort, which will be conducted on 1,200 of the city’s 4,500 hydrants. They will look at functionality, lubricate discharge outlets, and record flow data. Flow data allows crews to calculate the amount of water available to help battle fires. Flushing and testing will take place Monday through Friday from 7 a.m. to 5 p.m. Officials want Decatur residents to be aware that their water may be temporarily discolored if hydrants are being tested nearby. They also say neighbors should refrain from doing laundry until the water is clear, as clothes could get stained in the process.
