The Crawfordsville Fire Department may reduce the age limit for new department hires, if a proposed ordinance is approved by the Crawfordsville Common Council at their meeting next month. The Committee of Ordinances & Petitions sent the proposed ordinance to the full council with a favorable recommendation after Monday’s committees meeting. The proposed ordinance would allow changes to the Fire Merit System, which the Crawfordsville Fire Department has been operating under since 2013. “We implemented a merit system a few years ago, which was clearly a move in the right direction,” Crawfordsville Mayor Todd Barton said. “Since then we’ve continued to have some challenges.” One of the changes would include reducing the age limit for new hires from 21 years old to 18 years old.
