The role of battalion chief is being added to the rank system of the Crawfordsville Fire/EMS Department in order to have a chief on each daily shift. Fire Chief Scott Busenbark proposed the changes to the Board of Public Works and Safety, which approved the new command structure Wednesday. The battalion chief will be third in command of the department. As shift commander, the battalion chief is responsible for overseeing response and special operations guidelines, training and maintenance. The person ranks below the division chief and above a captain. In other business, the board took bids under advisement for the demolition of a house at 301-303 W. North St. that was gutted by fire two years ago. Three bids totaling $52,446 were received for the project. Property owner Dan Malek had asked the board in February for more time to clean up after the city issued an unsafe building order and recommended the house be demolished.
