Two people died in a house fire early Friday in the 900 block of North 11th Street.
The house is divided into three apartments, Lafayette Assistant Fire Chief Brian Alkire said.
One apartment was vacant; one person was rescued from the downstairs apartment, and the two who died lived in the second floor apartment, Alkire said.
The cause of the fire was under investigation, he said. Alkire said firefighters received the first call about the fire around 3 a.m. Friday.
In an apartment complex north of the house, Dennis Deluca heard the fire. "I seen it go up," he said. "We heard a loud pop and within five minutes, the whole thing went up."
Lafayette police were on scene investigating, too.
Alkire said that all fatal fires are considered a possible crime scene.
