VIDEO: Fire crews were called to a controlled burn that ended up out of control Wednesday in Warrick County.
It was in the Bluegrass Fish and Wildlife area. Elberfeld Fire Chief Dennis Miller tells us they were called out there around noon. That fire was put out around 1:30 p.m.
Miller says DNR was conducting a controlled burn to get rid of brush, ironically because it’s a fire hazard.
He says it’s something they do every year, and whenever they do, they let surrounding fire departments know.
Gusts of wind reached 25 miles per hour Wednesday, making it less than ideal conditions for a controlled burn.
That wind is what officials claim led to the fire spreading.
People all the way on the west side of Evansville reported seeing smoke in the sky from the fire. Dozens came out to the area to see what was going on.
