One injured in Riley County fire, home a total loss

Authorities are working to determine the cause of a weekend fire at a rural home in Riley County. Just before midnight Friday, crews were dispatched to a fire at 4721 Freeman Road near Tuttle Creek Lake, according to a media release from Riley County Fire District #1. The volunteer fire crews found smoke and flames showing from the residence. One resident was treated on scene for minor injuries he sustained while exiting the home. No other injuries were reported and no pets were lost in the fire. Unfortunately, the residence and nearby outbuilding were considered a total loss. The cause of this fire is under investigation by the Kansas Fire Marshal. Foul play is not suspected. Manhattan Fire Department Battalion 1 and Engine 1 responded as a mutual aid request. Crews remained on scene until 7:00 a.m. Saturday morning performing mop-up operations and monitoring conditions.

L35 Foundation keeps memory of late Sedgwick County firefighter alive

VIDEO: Putting on the uniform and fighting fires became more than a paycheck to Bryon Johnson. “He just found a love and a joy for the job, and it was just something that kind of lit his soul on fire,” Ariana Davis described her late husband. The Sedgwick County firefighter put his heart into his work. In 2007, a grass fire changed everything. “There were electrical lines involved. So, they talked about that on the way to the call. Unfortunately, with wind-driven conditions, it was something that just was not expected,” Davis said. Bryon died in the line of duty and left behind his wife, Ariana Davis. A decade later, she began opening up about his story and her grief. “I realized how kind of liberating it was to be able to share Bryon and his memory with new recruits from the fire department,” she said. “It gives them a little bit of pride in the brotherhood of the fire service.”

Update: What residents need to know about Wichita cyberattack

The City of Wichita released more information Friday about how a cyberattack on its computer systems is affecting residents. The ransomware attack happened on Sunday, and a City team has been fighting it since it was discovered. In the meantime, the City has turned off its computer network. “This decision was not made lightly, but was necessary to ensure that systems are securely vetted before returning to service,” the City said in a news release. There is no timetable for when the systems could be back online. The City also provided answers to frequently asked questions.
