Fire officials in Geary County say a hay fire that started late Wednesday afternoon is being investigated as an arson. Geary County Emergency Service say they received a report on a fire just east of Milford at 5:48 p.m. Milford City Fire and Geary County Fire responded to the scene. Ft. Riley Fire also arrived with water support since there were no fire hydrants in the area. When they arrived, a barn filled with large hay bales and alfalfa was on fire. Firefighters and others were able to save a tractor and other equipment from the open side of the building. Officials said seven other small outbuildings were in danger because of the strong wind and flying embers. Crews brought the fire under control around 8:30 p.m. Milford City Fire was on the scene through the evening and more units were called back around 11:30 p.m. after embers started a fire in one of the outbuildings. It was extinguished with minor damage.
