VIDEO: Every time there’s a fire, a person needs to be removed from a vehicle in a car accident, you call 911. And a firefighter will likely be the first to respond. “It’s an honor to be there,” said Jonathan Jarvis with the Wichita Fire Department. “If you ask anybody out here, 95 percent will tell you they are here because ‘I want to help people.’ But truly, that is why.” Since Jarvis was a little kid, he knew he wanted to be a firefighter. That desire never diminished, and he’s been with WFD for thirteen years. “It’s amazing to go into a high stress situation with your brothers knowing the guy next to you is as well-trained and has the same passion as you,” he said. “It’s an amazing opportunity, I wish everyone could feel it.” It’s a wish the firefighters wanted KAKE’s Greg Miller to feel – so he accepted an invitation to their training academy over the weekend. The firefighters outfitted participants of the academy with helmets, suits, boots and oxygen tanks to help them simulate being a firefighter.
