An early morning blaze Sunday destroyed a metal storage building near the vicinity of 10th and Kickapoo streets in Hiawatha.
Firefighting crews were called out at 12:55 a.m. to the area just north of Starr Park, according to Jordanne Shockley, public information officer with the Hiawatha Fire Department. She said firefighters were on the scene several hours until late Sunday morning, working on keeping the fire contained.
Initially, it took about an hour to get the huge fire - which created a glow that could be seen across the city and sent billowing smoke over the downtown area - down to a manageable size.
