Aldi, on Topeka's west side, closed their doors and blocked off their parking lot. Staffers could be seen tossing out items. The store, located at 1530 SW Arvonia Pl., was closed Monday morning, and will stay closed for an unknown amount of time due to a fire. According to the Topeka Fire department, smoke detectors inside the store started going off just before 3:00 a.m. Monday morning. When crews arrived on scene, they found the fire started due to “a malfunction of an electronic device.” The building was not damaged, but inside they report nearly $25,000 worth of damage. The fire forced staff to remove a lot of product from inside the store and throw it away. No one was at the store at the time of the fire. According to a sign on the front door they are asking customers to visit their location at 29th and Kansas Ave.
