Firefighters from Winfield and the surrounding area responded to a structure fire Saturday afternoon in the 1200 block of 14th Avenue, near Cherry Street. Smoke was seen coming from the house, although no flames were visible from the street. Neighbors said they were alerted to the fire when they smelled smoke, but didn't see or hear anything. According to Winfield Fire Department Capt. Justin Crawford, no one was home when the fire started, although two dogs died. The fire started in the kitchen area. The cause is still under investigation. The damage cost is estimated at $45,000. Crawford said there was smoke and heat damage throughout the house, in addition to kitchen damage. The fire was reported at 1:03 p.m. and brought under control in about 30 minutes.
