The Kansas Highway Patrol confirms 17 injuries to fifth-grade students in a crash involving a Wichita school bus south of Emporia on the Kansas Turnpike.
The bus, carrying the students from Wichita's Park Elementary School slid off the road about 15 miles south of Emporia, traveling north on its way to Topeka for a field trip.
The KHP says all of the injuries are minor (non-life-threatening) and students who weren't injured were transported to Emporia High School.
The Lyon County Sheriff's Office says the bus involved in the crash carried about 40 children and adults.
"Many were transported to Newman Regional Health (in Emporia) for minor injuries. Some were taken to Emporia High School, who graciously cared for the students," the sheriff's office says.
