The Kansas State Fire Marshal’s office is investigating a fatal fire with at least one victim at a Chanute apartment complex.
Just before 1:30 a.m. Thursday, the Chanute Fire Department responded to an alarm at the Cornerstone Apartment Complex, 1610 W. 4th Street. Crews found the west side apartment building fully involved in a fire, with flames coming from the roof.
The department said the apartments sustained considerable damage and that some citizens escaped and were injured.
The Red Cross has set up a location at Central Park Pavilion to help residents of the apartment who need shelter and assistance.
Fire departments from Parsons, Iola, and Thayer responded to fight the fire.
Sedgwick County Fire District 1 is sending a team to help with the fire investigation.
