A man fell into a downtown excavation site Monday and had to be rescued by Elizabethtown Fire Department. Deputy Chief Everett Roberts said a man, who was about 50 years old, was looking into the hole at an excavation site between apartments and a municipal parking area off Strawberry Alley. Roberts said the man apparently passed out and fell into the hole around noon Monday. Two workers on site when the fall happened attempted to help the man out of the hole, Roberts said. Because of the steady rain and muddy conditions, he said the workers needed help and first responders were called. Roberts said 11 firefighters responded along with Hardin County EMS. The fire department was able to remove the man from the pit and turn the patient over to EMS, he said. Roberts said it took his crews a matter of minutes to rescue the man from the hole, adding the fire department was on scene about 30 minutes.
