More than 40 units from the Shreveport Fire Department were at a cold-storage facility late Thursday afternoon. The fire occurred at Gulf States Cold Storage at 7199 W. Bert Kouns. The section of the road near it is closed until further notice. Authorities were dealing with a hazardous situation. Fire Chief Scott Wolverton says two workers at the facility told firefighters that a generator started the fire. The fire then spread to to refrigerators and other plastics in the building. In 1984, a Shreveport fire captain was fatally burned in an explosion at that facility when it was known as Dixie Cold Storage. Firefighter Pat Johnson survived that blast 35 years ago. He was severely burned and permanently disabled.
