Northshore firefighters battled several fires Tuesday night after temperatures dropped. Hammond firefighters responded to two fires Tuesday night. An oven sparked a house fire in one Hammond neighborhood, and a mobile home was destroyed due to an electrical fire. Hammond Fire Chief Daniel Folks said fires during the first cold snap are common. Another fire cause during cold snaps is inaccurate use of space heaters. Fire departments and the state fire marshal offer free smoke detectors to families in need.
