As flames ripped through the simulation building on the Maryland Fire and Rescue Institute campus Monday, Oct. 28, firefighters from across the Eastern Shore lined up to hone their skills. The training exercise for first responders as young as 17 simulated a structure fire with firefighters attacking it from three separate points while also performing a rescue of a life-size dummy weighing roughly the same as an adult male. Once they breached the door, crews rushed in to practice and practice again under the watchful eye of fire department veterans. “This regional program includes Kent, Caroline, Talbot and Queen Anne’s counties together,” said Francis Jester, coordinator for Career and Technology Program for the Fire and Emergency Management Services Commission. “They are here from 9:30 a.m. to noon every day the school’s in session."
