Kent Island Volunteer Fire Department responded to a fire at a vacant farmhouse on Tanners Lane Monday afternoon. Maryland Route 18/Main Street was closed from Castle Marina to Shopping Center Road for about 35 minutes to allow for emergency response. The call from a passerby came at 1:07 p.m., according to KIVFD firefighter Mills Yslas, who served as incident commander. Firefighters arrived to fire showing through the roof, but it was contained to a small portion of the third floor, Yslas said. It took 20 firefighters from KIVFD about 10 minutes to control and extinguish the fire, Yslas said. But they were on the scene for about two hours afterward, opening up the walls and roof to check for fire extension and hot spots, he added. “The fire was contained to a bedroom on the third floor — it burned the ceiling and balloon frame,” Yslas said.
