Church Hill Volunteer Fire Company made an unusual animal rescue Saturday evening, Feb. 8. They received a call at 5:17 p.m. for a horse stuck in a gate at a farm on Walnut Street. Crews arrived to find the horse with its hind legs stuck through the bars of a metal gate. “Apparently the horse had been kicking and jumping up and down, and it got too close to the gate,” said Assistant Fire Chief Steve Hurlock. When it came down, both back legs went through the same rung in the gate, and the horse couldn’t get them out. While the owner held the horse’s head and tried to calm it, Hurlock said he and others held the gate and fence steady. Another firefighter used a hacksaw to cut the bar to one of the pieces on the gate, and another one helped the horse get one leg free, Hurlock said. The horse was able to free the second leg on its own.
