Four people are now in the hospital with life-threatening injuries after being struck by lightning in Lafayette Park across from The White House Thursday evening. D.C. Fire and EMS officials said there were two men and two women who were treated and taken to the hospital, though they did not give an update on their condition during a press conference later in the evening. U.S. Park Police and Secret Service officers saw the lightning strike, and called D.C. Fire and EMS before providing life saving measures to the victims. D.C. Fire and EMS officials said Thursday this fast response by those officers already on scene could improve the survival chances for the victims. Where the lightning strike happened is a popular tourist spot, though officials did not say if the victims were tourists or D.C. natives.
