A teenager died after they became trapped in a townhouse fire Wednesday evening in Columbia, and two other people were injured, officials said. According to the Howard County Department of Fire and Rescue Services, firefighters were called around 7:30 p.m. to the 11500 block of Shell Flower Lane in Columbia's Hickory Ridge community. Firefighters brought the fire on the second floor under control "very quickly" before they found the teenager, officials said. Officials said two injured people were taken to a hospital. On Thursday morning, county police said Katie Chase, 15, died in the fire. She was a student at Wilde Lake High School and a member of its marching band. Investigators have determined the cause of the fire was accidental, but they declined to discuss how it started. The Red Cross has been requested to assist the home's residents.
