A fire broke out at a vacant home on the Cards Ridge Road in town early Monday and by the time firefighters arrived, flames were shooting out the front.
Someone driving by noticed the fire just before 7 a.m. and called 911. The flames left only part of two walls and the home’s two chimneys standing.
“En route we were told confirmed flames and smoke from the building,” Capt. Jim McCrum of the Greenbush Fire Department said as firefighters doused the debris. “Started mutual aid departments from Milford, Howland, Old Town and Bradley. Upon arrival, we had fire blowing out the front windows.”
“The challenge today has been water,” McCrum added later. “We’re shuttling water 2- to 2 ½-miles to get to the scene.”
About 25 firefighters from town and neighboring communities fought the fire. No injuries were reported.
