VIDEO: For aging volunteer fire departments across Maine, it is getting more and more difficult to recruit young firefighters. Crystal Dorr says she and her children were heading up to bed when a fire broke out in the chimney under the floor. "Maybe some buildup in creosote lower down in the chimney that somehow got ignited," Dorr said. While volunteer firefighters quickly got the flames under control, she says she likes the idea of Norridgewock hiring its first-ever, full-time firefighters. "Absolutely,” Dorr said. “So if they're able to commit their time to the fire department, I think the response will be quicker and it will be better for the residents of the area that they cover."
