Firefighters from more than a dozen departments helped battle a wildfire that spread quickly in Turner Thursday afternoon. A Maine Forest Service helicopter helped drop water on the fire from the air. Investigators said a homeowner was burning a pile off Buckfield Road when the controlled burn got out of hand. By the time crews were able to get the fire under control, it had burned about 12 acres. "It was pretty treacherous climbing up over the hill and stuff especially with all our equipment to try to fight the fire," said Turner Fire Chief Nathan Guptill. The fire danger in that part of Maine was listed as high on Thursday. The fire danger was listed as extreme in parts of southern and western Maine. The fire in Turner was just one of several reported across the state Thursday, including at least two that came close to buildings.
