VIDEO: A massive fire destroyed the Maine Turnpike Authority facility in Litchfield Thursday night. Millions of dollars’ worth of equipment was destroyed. “My reaction is like most people, can’t believe it,” MTA Chief Operations Officer Peter Merfeld said. With the Maine Turnpike Authority building engulfed in flames, an employee saw the fire and called 911. “Around 5 o’clock, one of our employees was leaving the yard and noticed some smoke coming out of the building behind me,” Merfeld said. Inside the eight-bay storage building were five plow trucks, a loader and a new traffic control vehicle among other equipment. All of the equipment and the building were destroyed. Now the focus is on what to do without the trucks that typically cover dozens of miles on the highway.
