President Biden declared May 4th and 5th, 2024 as National Fallen Firefighters Memorial Weekend. Those in the Bangor Fire Department are remembering fellow firefighters that have passed away during or as a result of their duty. Just over a year ago, Bangor firefighter Jacob Madden died in the line of duty. Firefighters we spoke with say Madden struggled with depression, and they say they hope to see more transparency and support around mental health for first responders. "The worst moments in people's lives...we are there, and we're sharing that with them, and we bring it home with us. We try to take care of each other, we talk about things and a lot of us go to therapy after. That mental health piece is very important and it's often not spoken about. There's still a little bit of shame to it," said Jeremiah Titus, Secretary of Bangor Professional Firefighters.
