The Firefighter Memorial 5K raised over $4,000 to put toward building a firefighter memorial by Fire Station 9 between Jules and Faron Streets.
Almost 80 runners and walkers participated in the 5K and raised money for the memorial.
The artist designing the memorial is Eric Fuson and it will incorporate bronze firefighter boot statues and will have a separate portion to specifically thank the historic St. Joseph fire department and honor local firefighters. Firefighter engineer Myke May said this memorial is necessary to honor the firefighters of St. Joseph
“I just feel that it’s an honorable profession and these guys that put their life on the line every day, and unfortunately, you know, we do lose some. And when that happens, I think it’s very important that we honor them the proper way,” May said.
