Joplin firefighters put out a fire at a commercial structure on S. Illinois Street.
This morning, July 23, 2020, around 8:00 a.m., the Joplin Fire Department responded to a report of smoke coming from the roof of a vacant commercial structure.
The first crew got there and found light smoke coming from the eaves on the west side of the structure. They went inside and found light smoke conditions, but no fire. They went back outside and started pulling metal from the building on the west side and found fire between the exterior and interior walls.
Crews put the fire out by 8:25 a.m. and stayed on scene until 10:05 a.m. ventilating and overhauling the area, according to the Fire Department.
There were no injuries reported.
Fire officials ruled the fire accidental “due to crews burning vegetation around the building and on the parking lot for maintenance.”
