Firefighters rescued a man and a puppy from a burning home early Thursday in Kansas City, a fire official said.
Firefighters responded to the fire about 7 a.m. in the 3400 block of Benton Boulevard.
Initial reports were that the house was fully engulfed, but arriving firefighters reported that fire was showing on the front porch. They were told that there might be people trapped inside.
While searching the home, firefighters found a man on a couch and helped him out of the house. He refused treatment, said Assistant Chief Jimmy Walker, a spokesman for the Kansas City Fire Department.
Minutes later they found the puppy and rescued it from the house, Walker said.
The cause of the fire is still under investigation. It appeared to start in the front of the house, Walker said, and there was smoke damage throughout.
“When I got here, they said the smoke was chugging out of everything,” Walker said.
