Grass fire spreads into wooded area, western edge of Carterville

A little after 3 p.m., reports of a grassfire on the west side of Carterville alerted Jasper County Emergency-911. Carterville Fire Dept responded along with Carterville Police to the western edge of town, fire was visible from Webb City along East Road. As the grass fire, fueled by the south wind, was spreading to the north into a densely wooded area the call for mutual aid went out to help protect homes along the 400 block of West McKee. Duenweg, Webb City, Oronogo, Carl Junction, Tri-Cities… responded to assist with brush trucks and manpower. As of 5:45 p.m., firefighters are still working hot spots in the trees, unseen from the roadway. However the fire I was contained about 4:30 p.m. and no structures were damaged. At 6:10 p.m., the fire was declared out, but some spots could continue to smolder through the night and firefighters will be out checking.
