Lincoln Fire & Rescue crews extinguish fire at apartment complex

Firefighters put out flames Thursday morning at a south Lincoln apartment complex. Lincoln Fire & Rescue was sent to the Garden Brooke Apartments near 13th and Arapahoe streets around 6:30 a.m. LFR spokeswoman MJ Lierman said firefighters found flames inside an apartment. A user of the NOW Local News App shared a video showing firefighters entering the apartment. Crews extinguished the fire before it spread to another apartment. No one was injured, but the fire caused $10,000 in damage, according to Lierman. An electrical malfunction in the apartment’s wall sparked the flames, Lierman said.

Follow Up: North Platte Fire Department reflects on Betty’s Way Fire

Two months have passed since the Betty’s Way Fire burned more than 70,000 acres northeast of North Platte, and leaders are reviewing what they can improve on. The fire spread throughout many counties across greater Nebraska, a daunting challenge that required the collective efforts of more than 30 agencies from across the state. According to North Platte Fire Department Chief Dennis Thompson, the department is now working on a plan to further strengthen these communication efforts between departments on different frequencies. ”We continue to look at communications. We have actually had some discussions with the Lincoln County Commissioners. They’re trying to look at some opportunities to assist departments with improving communications and may be trying to get us all on a compatible frequency. That can be difficult just because of the number of departments that are out there, and we are getting a lot of cooperation there,” Thompson said.
