An early Friday morning fire displaced two families from their homes and caused over $100,000 of damage in the city’s Westside neighborhood.
About 3:20 a.m., firefighters from Engine 3, about a half a block away, responded to the 800 block of Indiana Avenue for a structure fire that had spread to a second home, Fire Chief Scott Evans said. A 30-by-10-foot sunroom was “engulfed and destroyed by the fire,” he added.
There were no injuries to the two adults and one child in the home, Evans said, and firefighters believe that they were alerted to the flames by their dog and were able to get out. The second home was unoccupied at the time, he said, and it appeared to be a vacation home.
The Red Cross has been notified, he added.
“The biggest hazard (firefighters) faced on arrival was the electrical meter that melted,” Evans said. “It created sparks and it was a concern to get the electric shut off quickly.”
