As the Jersey City skyline continues to expand, so is the fire department’s arsenal for fighting flames in high-rise buildings.
On Monday, the city unveiled a new $680,000 pumper truck equipped with twice the water pressure of a standard engine, making it capable of reaching a building’s top floors quicker in the event of a fire.
“As the city grows, we are trying to be proactive,” Jersey City Mayor Fulop said during a ceremony at Jersey City Fire Headquarters on Marin Boulevard. With approximately 200 high-rises, including several over 900 feet tall, Jersey City officials say it is currently home to the most tall buildings per capita in the nation. Fulop also expects Jersey City to be “neck-and-neck” with Newark as the largest city in the state based on 2020 Census data.
