A South River couple was killed in a crash Sunday night involving East Brunswick’s fire chief, who was responding to a call with the emergency vehicle’s lights and siren activated, authorities said Monday.
Authorities did not identify the couple pending notification of their family. Officials are investigating the crash after East Brunswick police did not notify the Middlesex County Prosecutor’s Office in a timely fashion, a spokesperson for the prosecutor’s office said.
The chief of the volunteer fire department, whose name was not released, has been placed on administrative leave while “facts are clarified,” Sheryl Kotora, an executive administrator with East Brunswick Fire Department #1 said.
The crash occurred in East Brunswick on Old Bridge Turnpike near Gunia Street around 7:30 p.m., officials said. The South River couple were taken to Robert Wood Johnson Univeristy Hospital in New Brunswick, where they were pronounced dead, officials said.
