Eight people were displaced after a residential building in the Jersey City Heights caught fire early Wednesday morning, an official said.
Firefighters responded to the three-story building at 17 Hopkins Ave. shortly after midnight and contained the fire to the first and second floors of the structure, Jersey City spokeswoman Kimberly Wallace-Scalcione said.
No injuries were reported but the Red Cross relocated eight adults, Wallace-Scalcione said, adding that the cause of the fire remains under investigation. Building resident Vimer Capellan, who lives on the second floor, said his parents woke him up in the middle of the night to escape the building. The damage the fire caused to the exterior of the building was apparent Wednesday when a cleanup crew seen was removing debris from the property.
