The Hasbrouck Heights man accused of walking into St. Patrick’s Cathedral in New York with gasoline and a lighter in April has been deemed unfit to stand trial, officials said.
Two experts in mental health determined that Marc Lamparello, 37, was not fit to stand trial, said Christopher DiLorenzo, Lamparello's attorney. Prosecutors will decide whether they agree with the assessment.
Lamparello, who was indicted on attempted arson and reckless endangerment charges, will remain in Bellevue Hospital Center’s prison ward pending a court hearing June 7.
"I'm not surprised by the conclusion, given my interaction with my client and the recent events," DiLorenzo said. He citing a December 2018 police report in which Lamparello feared he was being stalked by plainclothes officers who were watching him.
