Two fires reported within five minutes of each other had nearly all Trenton fire companies working midday on Thursday, the fire department said.
At 11:45 a.m., the department responded to Turpin Street in South Trenton and Engine 10 found flames ripping through the rear of a vacant home in the middle of a row of five houses. About five minutes later, as firefighters were upgrading the fire to a full first alarm, a blaze was reported on Culbertson Avenue, in the East Ward. The second fire originated in a home’s clothes dryer, and was more smoke than fire. No injuries were reported.
On Turpin Street, firefighters contained the flames in a short period, but companies stayed on the scene until the afternoon while fire investigators were on scene. The Turpin Street fire was considered suspicious, and likely caused by someone squatting in the structure, the department said.
