The council has approved a $6 million firehouse that will feature upgraded bays to replace a 60-year-old building.
"We are obviously pleased to be moving forward," said Fire Chief Peter Insetta. "We are looking forward to working with the mayor, council and architect. It’s a team effort."
Councilman Michael Ullman was the sole dissenting vote on the ordinance, adopted Monday, that authorized the issuance of $5.7 million in bonds to finance the project.
While Ullman said the firefighters deserve a new firehouse, he had concerns about the cost and felt that the designs could have consolidated space to save money.
Township Administrator Robert Tovo said the hope is that the new firehouse will be ready by year’s end. The firehouse was built in 1953, as a one-story building with three bays. In 1965, two bays were added, along with a second story, Insetta said.
