A lightning caused fire in the San Mateo Mountains west of Magdalena has grown to 300 acres. According to Cibola National Forest’s Magdalena Ranger District, the fire started Saturday, July 13, in the Apache Kid Wilderness in Socorro County, and is designated as the Roberts Fire. Road and trail use is not advised in the area due to fire traffic and the proximity of the fire. The weather forecast calls for afternoon and evening thunderstorms, with the possibility for gusty winds developing around thunderstorms. Smoke will be visible from Highway 52, Highway 107, and Highway 60 west of Magdalena and Interstate 25 south of Socorro as fire behavior increases. The fire size is likely to increase in these conditions throughout the week with district closures likely to be implemented on Forest Roads and trails. Approximately 151 personnel have been assigned to the fire. Resources include two Wildland Fire Modules, three Type I Hot Shot crews, four Type 6 Engines, three assigned dozers and one Type 3 Helicopter.
