VIDEO: The Nevada Department of Wildlife (NDOW) is investigating the death of a six-year-old girl, who drown on Lake Mead Saturday.
According to a press release from NDOW, strong winds pushed the girl and a friend, who were on a pool float away from the shore.
Wardens responded to the call at 2:35 p.m. Saturday and were able to rescue one of the children but could not locate the second. Her body was recovered that evening by Las Vegas Metropolitan Police divers.
NDOW wardens also pulled several good Samaritan swimmers from the water who were attempting to rescue the children. "It seems harmless, but a pool float is not designed for the lake. The wind on Lake Mead will take it and put a person in danger very quickly," said Warden James Mortimore. "And once the wind picks up, there is little chance of anyone swimming out to retrieve the float, I don't care how strong of a swimmer you are."
