VIDEO: Fire season has begun with wildfires breaking out in Southern California, Arizona and New Mexico. Here in northern Nevada we are still mainly in the green up phase, but as grasses dry out fire season concerns will ramp up. When it comes to looking ahead to fire season there are a few key ingredients to keep in mind. We remain dry, that is no secret, as our water year total to date is almost 3.5'' below what it should be. Another obvious note, our snowpack was severely lacking this year. As of May 5th the Lake Tahoe Basin was at 7% of average for this time of year. So while we should be melting snow right now we shouldn't be almost done melting it like we are right now.
