Sen. Rob Portman, R-Ohio, visited Mansfeld Lahm Regional Airport Tuesday and saw the site where a $13 million fire station is scheduled be built this year at the 179th Airlift Wing of the Ohio National Guard Base.
“We fought very hard to put that in the military construction bill this fiscal year. There is a need for the Air National Guard base and also for the airport,” Portman said in an interview with the News Journal.
He said he had just read a list of military construction projects that may be in jeopardy because of President Donald Trump’s emergency spending proposal for the border wall, and the Mansfield fire department was not on it so the project appears safe.
“We think the airbase is going to be OK,” Portman said.
